Hike Laura’s Tower Trail

There’s so much to explore outdoors in the Berkshires, but one of our top activities to do in Great Barrington in the summer is a late afternoon hike. We especially love Laura’s Tower Trail because it’s heavily wooded and shady. It’s moderately difficult and 1.5 miles round trip so make sure to bring lots of water and time your exercise so it falls later in the day when the weather is cooler. But it’s worth the work—the summit provides a panoramic view of the middle of the Berkshires, and on a clear day, you can see 68 miles out to the New York Catskills and 50 miles north to Vermont’s Green Mountains.

Swim in Lake Mansfield

With a grassy shaded picnic area, swings, forest trails, and free parking, the Lake Mansfield Recreation Area is a perfect place to spend the day. Lounge out on the beach before taking a dip into the 29-acre pond or gathering the kids to investigate nature science in the area. This park is a protected ecosystem so you won’t find any exotic invasive species on the land or in the water.

Learn at The Clark

This local museum presents special exhibitions throughout the year on topics ranging from nature, the senses, war, writers, and more. Currently, the abstract paintings of Tomm El-Saieh are on display. The Clark also has their permanent collections available for guests to view all year around, featuring European and American paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century.
